Grasses were planted on the slide-slopes of the pond down to the water line. The plan is to complete seeding as the water level subsides. The water level is going down at a very slow rate. American Engineering Testing was contacted to determine why the pond is infiltrating at such a slower rate. Evans asked whether or not the extra work related to the pond would increase the cost of the project. Dolan thought that the cost would most likely be negotiable. AET determined that the bottom of the pond has a layer of silt, sediment and salt that is believed to either be naturally in the soil or have washed in from various inlets, such as the Curtiss Field parking lot or Snelling service drive, as well as erosion from fine soil particles from the sides of the pond since grading was completed. Long though it was hard to believe the sediment came from the construction and was most likely there prior to construction. The proposed solution is to clean the pond bottom after vegetation has had a chance to take hold on the side-slopes. If the pond isn’t dry at that time, it will have to be dewatered before the sediment is removed. After final preparation the pond will be tested for it’s permeability. All of the sidewalks are now in, as well as the gazebo slab. The trees and shrubs will be planted beginning on August 16th. The turf grass and sod will be installed after the tree and planting beds are installed. Park benches, trash receptacles and the gazebo will be installed after Labor Day. Davy met with Carol Kriegler to discuss signage at Curtiss Field. Carol is currently working on some designs. The plan is for three signs to be placed around the park. One sign would be on the south-west corner of the park. Long suggested the sign be placed close to Snelling Ave. so that it is visible from the street. A second sign would be placed on the north-west corner of the park near the gazebo. The third sign would be placed at the entrance to the park on W. Iowa Avenue. When meeting with Carol Kriegler, Heather Worthington mentioned to her the idea of coming up with an additional city logo that would be more of a cartoon-type character. Kriegler suggested we contact Jim Rickard of J. Rickard Designs. The character would be used on various flyers. Dolan and Long both agreed that the new logo should not replace the old logo on letterhead, but should be used mainly by the parks & recreation department. Public Works Director Update Greg Hoag was hired as the Director of Public Works. Greg comes from the City of Little Canada where he was the Park Maintenance Supervisor for 10 years. He will begin working on August 16th. Recreation Update The Ice Cream Social was very successful. Approximately $900 was made on ticket sales. The Twin Cities Co-Ops Federal Credit Union donated $500 to the Friends of the Park Fund at the Ice Cream Social. Long requested the contact information for the bank so that he could write a letter of thanks. Soccer camp, a program that was added this year, ran last week and went well. There were sixteen children registered between the ages of 6 – 12. Babysitter training begins this week for children ages 11 – 15. Five people are registered for the class which is taught by a Red Cross Instructor. Evans inquired about the parking situation for the Fair on the SE corner because of the construction. Long thought that more alternative parking would be found North of the corner. Dolan asked when Fair signs would be placed throughout the City. Davy heard maintenance discussing the signs during the week and thought they would begin putting them up next week. Meeting ended at 7:30 p.m. Minutes respectfully submitted by Ann Davy.
