City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting
January 12, 2004

Approval of agenda – agenda approved unanimously
Call to order
Election of chair for 2004 – Chuck Long was nominated and elected chair for 2004
Review of 2003 accomplishments –
Completed plans for Curtiss Field improvements.
Worked with the Capital Region Watershed and the developer of the SE corner to reduce water flow from that site to Curtiss Field by 72%
Awarded grant of $54,000 from DNR to improve the Trolley Path. Held 4 public meetings to work on neighborhood approval of improvements.
Reduced recreation program expenditures by 23% while increasing participation.
Provided recreation scholarships for 22 children with funds raised by the Falcon Heights Friends of the Parks Fund.
Held two successful, well attended community events.
Installed ADA compliant surface at Grove Park.
Received a $3,000 donation from the Falcon Heights Lions Club for the installation of a new playground structure that will be installed in spring of 2004
Initiated a new field use policy that recovers costs of field use by large tournaments.
Participated in preliminary discussions with Falcon Heights Elementary School over collaborative efforts to enhance recreation facilities at the school. Items discussed include a new
playground with a creative play element and a hockey rink.
Recreation Coordinator search – Maertz stated that there were 26 applicants and 6 people were interviewed. Staff was prepared to make a job offer to Ann Davy.
Trolley Path – Maertz reviewed the design criteria that emerged from neighborhood meetings. Kestrel Design Group is using the feedback from those meetings to develop a design concept
that can be presented to the Grove Association. Deen suggested that the design be presented to the Trolley Path group before it is presented to the Grove Association.
Falcon Heights Elementary School: recreation agreement – Maertz stated that the school is seeking a financial commitment from the City towards a new playground and that the City wanted
to enter into a recreation agreement with the school in order to expand recreational opportunities in the NE quadrant of Falcon Heights.
Dead of Winter Event at Community Park scheduled for Feb 8 from 1:00 Pm to 4:00 PM.
Goal Setting for 2004
Complete Curtiss Field improvements
Resolve lease at Community Park
Move forward with getting approval for Trolley Path construction
Investigate recreation opportunities at Falcon Heights Elementary School
Continue fundraising efforts for Falcon Heights Friends of the Parks
