Staff Report Recreation Update-Abernathy reported the spring/summer activity guide has been distributed to the local schools, was inserted in the latest city newsletter and is available online. North Suburban Soccer Association will be renting Community Park field again this summer. They will be using the field from the end of April till the end of July. They were the only organization that submitted a request again this summer. Public Works Update- Pittman reported public works will begin taking rink boards down as the weather continues to warm up. Upcoming projects include tree trimming at the parks, fertilizing and continuing the replacement of sidewalks this summer. 4. Community Park Sand Box update Abernathy updated the Commission on its past discussion of possibly using the replacement of the sidewalk/concrete area around Community Park as an opportunity to incorporate some sort of public art in the old sandbox area near the building. Meeting guest Karen Rajcic brought forth a few ideas regarding the space and ideas for different types of pavers or imprints that could be options to consider. Many options would allow a drawing or design to be lasered or imprinted on a granite type paver/stone and then embedded into the concrete slab. The commission agreed that finding out the cost of this type of paver would be the best place to start and from there develop a plan of how the City would make them available. Abernathy recommended using this as a fund raising event for the Friends of the Park Fund and incorporating the community as a whole. The Commission agreed to continue to look at this possibility, the cost and a time frame in which it can be marketed and implemented. Based on the cost analysis and long term maintenance required the Commission will decide how to go about implementing this to the community. 5. Summer Programs and Events Abernathy reported that registrations have begun. New programs this summer include Artistic Adventures (3-4 year olds), Ultimate Frisbee (ages 8-13) and Tae Kwon Do camp (ages 5-12). Abernathy also reported that summer staff has all been hired. All of the summer staff will be returning leaders and a new summer coordinator has been hired to plan and organize the playground/camp programs. Abernathy also reported she has secured Underwater Adventures to attend the Ice Cream Social again this summer and will be contacting John Steiner’s band about performing again this year. 8. New Business Abernathy reminded the Commission that the City will be holding another rain barrel workshop on April 3rd. There is still room if anyone wishes to register.
