City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting
July 7, 2010

1. Meeting called to order 6:30 PM
2. Approval of minutes June 14th
Waite motioned approval of minutes of June 14th seconded by Faust.
3. Staff Report
Recreation Update-
Tesser report on recreation programs:
Currently, the nature camps are a little low in attendance but the TKD camp is
very popular this year. Tesser has been spending a lot of time advertising and
to get the word out about the August camps. Tesser plans to provide
registration for camps at Parks Commission table at ICS. Fox will stand at the
table to outreach to incoming visitors.
Comment Cards
Comment cards is a tool to keep our recreation leaders motivated to continue to
do exceptional work with the kids as well as giving parents the ability to let us
know how we are doing. Tesser shared the incoming comment cards with
commissioners.
Public Works Update-
Tesser shared the public works update with commissioners. Public works
continues to focus on rechipping and mowing parks to prepare for the ICS.
Additional, spending time on completing sidewalks. Cleanup of Curtis Fields will
occur on 7/17/10, there will be 20 volunteers picking weeds and collecting
garbage.
Calendar of Future Topics for Meetings-
Tesser handed out a calendar of future topics for upcoming meetings.
4. Ice Cream Social (ICS)
Tesser reported on the planning of the ICS on Thursday, July 29th 2010 at
6:00pm-8:00pm.
Available for purchase will be root beer floats, ice cream cones and sundaes,
cookies and beverages. Underwater Adventures will be visiting with their
bouncy shark castle and ocean animals. Underwater Adventures will not have
sharks on display this year because they are dying to easily in transport.
Other Activities will include a fishing pond, button making, spin art, face
painting, cake walk, dunk tank and tug of war contest.
Tesser confirmed entertainment will be by Steiners Band.
Tesser ordered ice cream/ large cupcakes instead of cakes because of the
expense of the cake. Instead there will be a Cookie Sundae Delight.
5. Falcon Heights/Lauderdale 5k Run August 21, 2010 8am
o Sponsorship from Wellness Center and Finn/Sisu $500 to t-shirts! Tesser is
working on other donators (beverage, bagels, fruit)
o 6 Registrations received
o Tesser continues to try to get the word out through list serves, newspaper,
flyers etc. Posters are currently up at city hall with registrations. Tesser has
posted several flyers around the City. Tesser asks commission to spread
the word.
6. Fall/Winter Programming
Tesser discussed fall programs including: Soccer, Tennis, Yoga and Family
Yoga, Tae Kwon Do and TKD (little tikes), Golf (through U of M Golf Course)
and a possible cheerleading program. Tesser is currently drafting the fall
program to be distributed during the first week of school.
7. Fall Events
Tesser announced the fall events. Tesser asked commissioners to spread the
word. The events will be listed in the fall program guide.

8. Bike Safety Event
Hanson discussed her confirmation that Steve Sanders the Bike Coordinator
for the University, is willing to do a bicycle class next spring. Commission
scheduled the date of the bike safety event to be on Saturday, May 5th at
Falcon Heights Elementary School parking lot. The event will have education
on: helmet fitting, hand symbols, proper bike maintenance and proper passing
and pedestrian crossings. Possible collaboration with local bike shops was
discussed. There will also be a child car seat safety class at Falcon Heights
City Hall performed by Regions. The location is at City Hall because Regions
requires a garage in case of bad weather.
9. New Business
Sanders discussed replacing one of the children’s wooden seated spring chair
in the playground because children are receiving splinters. Also, discussed
was replacing the door to the outhouse, sand in the sand box and adding
mulch to the park.
Commission discussed the possibility of a future survey given out to residents.
Tesser will check on the status of the 2010-2011 budget. Last survey was
done in 2007.
Sanders asked the city to purchase a popcorn machine because of the cost for
the rental is so high and it’s a money generator. Tesser will look further into
the request.
Sanders suggested that if the 2010-2011 budget is tight to not provide t-shirts.
Commission suggested Tesser to put together small calendars of Parks and
Recreation classes and events for distribution during the ICS. Tesser will do
this for the ICS event.

Next Park Commission meeting will be Monday, Sept 13th at Falcon
Heights Community Park
