HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes June 2010Minutes ______________________________ City of Falcon Heights, Park and Recreation Commission Meeting June 14, 2010 6:30PM _____________________________ Meeting Chair: Annie Green Minutes By: Michelle Tesser Present Members: Annie Green, Lonetta Hanson, Matthew Waite, Melissa Weber- Sanders Staff: Elisabeth Fox, Michelle Tesser and Tim Pittman Council Liaison: Keith Gosline Absent: Gary Kwong, Paul Faust, Serena Jones-White 1. Meeting called to order 6:30 PM 2. Approval of minutes April 12, 2010 No minutes provided. 3. Staff Report Recreation Update- Tesser report on recreation programs: The programs offered currently are: TKD, Little Tikes TKD, Artistic Adventure, What’s Cooking, Playtime with Parents, Pee Wee Sampler, Summer Discovery Playgrounds, Basketball, Tennis, T-ball, Soccer, Lacrosse Eight classes were cancelled due to low attendance: Ultimate Frisbee, Lacrosse 9-13 (1 class), T-ball (1 class), Extreme Soccer (9-10) (1 class), Super Soccer (7-8) (1 class), Pee Wee Tennis 5-7 (1 class), 3 on 3 basketball girls, boys 9-11. The most popular program this year was Summer Discovery Playgrounds. There were several names were on the waiting lists and we had to close registrations in May. Tesser also noted the number of participants of Summer Programs was 263 The number of scholarships awarded: 2009: 17 and 2010: 13 August camps (lil explorer, tennis, adventure camp) have good numbers and therefore will not be canceled. Public Works Update- Pittman reported that public works is working on curbside and sweetscape work. Street sweeping will be completed this week. And a 2nd application of fertilizer will be done by Wednesday. 4. Ice Cream Social The annual Ice Cream Social is on Thursday, July 29th 2010 at 6:00pm-8:00pm. Activities will include a moon walk, fishing pond, face painting, crafts, tug of war contests, etc. Musical Entertainment and Underwater Adventure will also be there. Members discussed the possibility of a scavenger hunt/Geo cashing before and during the event. Members requested putting up the Ice Cream Social banner at Community Park. Tesser will task the request. Tesser asked that members of the commission email her with times they are available to man the Parks Commission table during the event. 5. Falcon Heights/Lauderdale 5k Run August 21, 2010 8am The coordinator of the 5k run will be a Lauderdale Business: The wellness center, the new chiropractor is Matt Caldwell o Registrations were sent to past participants of the 5k run in beginning of June. o Posters are currently up at city hall and registrations. o The City has opened enrollments for the run online. o Pre register by August 6th and get a run t-shirt . o Promoting the 5k race will continue throughout the summer. Other fall events: Touch a Truck and Falcon Heights Women’s Soccer Team Day were also discussed. More details on the events to come at a later date. 6. Fall/Winter Programming Tesser discussed possible fall programs including: soccer, water color painting class, Slow Flow Yoga and Restorative Yoga, Tae Kwon Do and little tikes TKD, also possibly golf and a cheerleading program. Tesser will be drafting the fall program in later June/ early July and will be reviewed by the commission on July 12, 2010. 7. Budget The preliminary budget for 2011 will be required in August. Tesser will be reviewing the budget from previous years and will discuss the budget in more depth at a later commission meeting. 8. New Business A Bike safety class implemented in Spring 2011 was discussed. Weber-Sanders requested the safety class with instructions on helmet and hand movements. Invitees would include residents of all ages as well as local bike shops. Also, discussed was the possibility of having a raffle at the event. Hanson discussed knowledge of a Bike Coordinator that may be able to conduct the training. Hanson will speak to the Bike Coordinator for interest and possible spring dates. Commission members requested that new members receive Parks Commission Folders. Tesser will look for the Parks Folder and make copies for the next commission meeting. Members also discussed possible work items a Parks Intern could accomplish which includes: surveys, wish lists, future programming and agreements with U of M Golf Course and CTC. Tesser will keep an ongoing list of these work items for future internship proposals.
