Meeting Minutes
March 14, 2011
Present: Peter Lindstrom, Brian Goodspeed, Ethan Wagner, Gretel Keene, Rebecca
Montgomery, Diane Ross, Justin Miller
Absent: Stan Sveen, Nina Semmelroth
Guests: Rom Windingstad, Audubon Society
1. Minutes of the February 14th meeting were approved with no changes.
2. Ron Windingstad from the Audubon Society presented information on building Chimney
Swift towers. According to him, the number of nesting ground for these birds is decreasing
as more and more chimneys are being removed or capped. His organization helps cities,
schools, and other groups locate and build chimney -like towers to encourage the nesting of
chimney swifts, which eat insects and are a vital part of the ecosystem. The commission
was very interested in continuing the discussion, and identified several locations within the
city that could house such structures.
3. Miller presented updated recycling reports from Tennis Sanitation. Overall, the tonnage
recycled has increased over past years, while the participation rate has decreased.
Montgomery asked whether a better measure of participation by household could be
measured since not every house recycles each week, which is causing the participation
numbers to skew downward. Miller stated that he would continue to bring these reports to
the commission so that the new single -sort system could continue to be evaluated.
4. For future items, Montgomery asked that the commission look into a program where the
city could encourage the planting of more trees on private property. This item will be
brought back on a future agenda.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm.
