MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />MAY 28, 2008 <br />VEHICLE Smiley reviewed the Master Vehicle Replacement Schedule, dated <br />REPLACEMENT December, 2003. Smiley noted staggering costs of fire vehicle <br />SCHEDULE replacement. He also indicated that most of the recent improvements with <br />fire trucks relate to safety features and emission standards. In response to <br />Blesener's question, Smiley indicated that the Little Canada Fire <br />Department is on a 20-year replacement schedule. He thought that most <br />of the sui•~•ounding cities were on a 20 to 25-year replacement schedule. <br />Those present discussed this schedule, and it was the consensus of the <br />Council that the life of these vehicles should be extended as far out as <br />possible. <br />CAPITAL Steve Morelan reviewed the list of capital improvement needs that the <br />IMPROVEMENT Fire Department anticipates will need to be done within the next 3 to 5 <br />PLAN years. In addition to truck replacement, these include: <br />Tuck point fire station; <br />Carpet fire station; <br />Fire station monument sign; <br />Relocation of overhead water fills in fire station; <br />Firefighters' historical trail; <br />Fire station lighting; <br />Equipment mounting L14, E15, R17. <br />ADDITIONAL Tim Morelan indicated the Fire Department's discussion about the <br />ISSUES potential for future expansion of the existing station and/or parking. One <br />step toward resolving this issue would be to obtain first right of refusal on <br />the adjacent property at 331 Little Canada Road. Morelan indicated that <br />the Fire Department would be willing to assist financially in the pm•chase <br />of this property with their charitable gambling dollars. <br />Blesener suggested that a committee be put together as suggested earlier in <br />the meeting to discuss the Allina issue as well as fire department <br />expansion needs. <br />Steve Morelan reviewed additional items for discussion. The first <br />involves the need to work with Vadnais Heights Fire Department on a <br />permanent co-response plan fro the I35E/I694 commons area. The next is <br />the Fire Department's planning for a possible carbon monoxide alarm <br />giveaway program for single-family homeowners. It was noted that State <br />Law will require these detectors in all existing single-family homes by <br />August 1, 2008. New construction must have detectors by August 1, <br />2009. (Per the City Building Official, new construction is already <br />required to install CO alarms, existing single-family homes will be <br />
