MINUT'rS
CITY COUNCIL
MARCII 23, 2005
City over the past many years that had a tremendous benefit for the
residents of Little Canada. I-Ie also noted their efl'orts in setting up a
computer lab and program for use by the general public at Little Canada
Elementai.y School. Blesener recognized Millennium's work at the
Dorothy Day Center which earned them an award from Catholic Charities.
Blesener thanked Millennium for all their hard worl: and generosity and
noted that they will be sorely missed.
Blesener asked ifs there were any comments or ideas those present this
evening would like to put forth. Blesener stated that until there is a Little
Canada organization willing to step forward and take over operating at the
Little Canada Bingo Hall, he was not sure what the Council could do.
Betty Strohbeen, Lal.e Owasso Volunteer Council, noted that their
organization has raised money through charitable gambling for the past '17
years. Strohbeen noted that Millennium Charity Plus has worked very
hard to resolve the problems they were left with, and she feels badly about
the situation. Strohbeen agreed that the Millennium's employees are good
and hoped any new organisation stepping forward would take those
employees on. Strohbeen indicated that LaI<e Owasso is willing Yo take on
one additional day at the bingo hall for the long teen, and will help out
with additional days, ii' necessary, for the short term. Strohbeen felt from
a compliance standpoint, it was better to operate two days at the bingo hall
rather than one. She noted that Lake Owasso had two days at one Yime,
but: when the Historical Society wanted to get into charitable gambling,
they gave up one of their days.
Bob Anderson, Little Canada 1-iistorical Society, reported that their
organisation will remain in operation at the bingo hall through August of
2005. At Chat time ti~eir license will be up for renewal and they will not he
renewing.
Betty Matson, North Suburban Youth Foundation, stated that them
organization will do whatever necessa~_y to help keep the bingo ha11 in
operation and indicated they are willing to take on one more day at the
hall.
Keis asked if the bingo hall needed to be open 7 days per week Strohbeen
felt that it did, noting the impact on its ci~istomer base if it is closed.
Blesener noted that the ownership of the shopping center would prefer the
bingo hall remain open 7 days per week.
LaValle asked about the day sessions at the hall. Strohbeen reported that
the Thursday and Friday morning sessions have been profitable.
Anderson indicated that the Tuesday morning session is profitable as well.
5
