The acquisition of the Turnquist and
Schletty wetland areas are
recommended in order to preserve
these unique natural areas and
protect them from encroachment by
adjacent development. These areas
offer abundant wildlife habitat and
serve a very valuable function in
terms of drainage, ponding and
groundwater recharge. Maintaining
these wetland areas in their natural
state is important for the ultimate
health of Gervais Lake.
The acquisition of the remainder of
the NSP transmission line R.O.W. is
recommended in order to complete the
linear park and trail system from
LaBore Road to Desoto Street. The
trail system as proposed would
connect Westwinds Park, Thunder Bay
Park and Pioneer Park. The
remaining acquisition includes one
parcel west of LaBore Road, and all
right-of-way west of Payne Avenue.
A triangular parcel (Waterworks
Park) approximately three (3) acres
in size, located on the south side
of South Owasso Boulevard east of
the waterworks right-of-way is
recommended for acquisition. This
parcel is located in an area of the
City that is not currently served by
a neighborhood park and would
therefore help to balance the park
system.
DEVELOPMENT
The City of Little Canada has a very
active park development program
underway. Major park improvements
have been constructed in the
following parks:
Spooner Park
Pioneer Park
Thunder Bay Park
Gervais Mill Park
Kellogg Hockey/Pleasure Skating Rink
Fire Barns Hockey/Pleasure Skating
Rink

52
