MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
August 1, 2002
set aside for the Releaf Program to another item. Ponding vegetation was discussed as a
possibility for those funds. The City Administrator recommended leaving the fwrds where
they are until other options could be discussed.
The City Administrator stated that the Mayor and City Council have made it known that they
would like to find a way to finish the trail connections. He recommended that a workshop be
scheduled in October with the Mayor and Council to set priorities for this work. The City
Administrator stated that the Director will supply the Commission with a report on the trails
for their next agenda.
Sackett Glaser stated that the $812,500 budgeted for trail connections in 2004 be moved to
2005 since we did not receive a grant this year.
ASPEN POND Broten commented that there are invasive willows surrounding Aspen Pond that are
sending shoots through the pavement on the far east end. These willows are also screening
the pond so residents can hardly see the water. Broten felt that the pond could be dressed up
to be an amenity. One resident has removed the willows adjacent fo his property and it looks
very nice. The City also planted flowering trees in the area. However, wood chip barriers
need to be placed around the trees to prevent scaring from the mowers. The City
Administrator indicated that he would have Parks Maintenance look into this issue.
Sanders recommended limiting the willows so they aren't so invasive. However, they are
hard to completely eliminate. Possibly the Watershed District could help with this matter.
Sanders also commented that neighbors should be invited in to see what they would like in
the area.
RONDEAU Schabacker reported that he checked the water level of the pond after last month's meeting
PARK POND and it was overflowing. However, we had received lots of rain. The City Administrator
stated that city offices did receive some complaints from the townhome residents on algae on
the pond. He told them to refrain from using phosphorus when fertilizing their grass. Also,
the hot, humid weather has not helped the situation.
ADJOURN Scl:abacker recommended that the meeting be adjourned.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motio~r carried 6 - 0.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
Respe , f submitf ,d, /
~~~~~
is echman
Page 2 of 2
