MINUTES <br />YLANNIN(Y COMMISSION <br />JANUARY 10, 2002 <br />Keis stated that the City does not purchase property in order to prevent <br />development from occurring. The City would have to have a need or <br />purpose {or the property in order to pw'chase it. <br />Carson stated that as a member of the Natural Resources Board, he would <br />suggest that one thing property owners can do to help the quality of water <br />going into Gervais would be to not mow the last 35 feet of their <br />backyards. <br />Pam Brausen, Viking Drive, pointed out that the residents along Viking <br />Drive have to put up with I Iighway 36, as well as a very busy road in front <br />of their properties. To put in this street would result in another road <br />behind their properties Brausen asked that this wetland area be protected, <br />and reported that she has seen a bald eagle flying over this pond. <br />Vance Johnson, County Road B-2, stated that he was concerned with the <br />ecological character of the land. He believed that there is subterranean <br />water flowing from this area into Gervais and felt that bulldozing the area <br />would disturb this flowage. Johnson stated that there is a spotted skunk on <br />the property, and the DNR has indicated that there have been no spottings <br />of this animal in the past year in Minnesota. <br />A resident asked about tree replacement. <br />Howe reported that there would be trees planted around the units and on <br />the retaining wall. No trees that exist in the wetland area will be <br />destroyed. <br />A member of the audience indicated that there are no trees in the wetland <br />area. <br />Dave Brausen, Viking Drive, indicated that all the trees are in the area <br />where the street and units would be developed. Brausen asked who will <br />compensate him for his loss of property value. <br />Bernie McCanna, Sunrise Drive, stated that he opposed the rezoning and <br />supported asingle-family residential development of a few executive <br />homes. McCanna felt that a development with few homes would be more <br />beneficial in protecting the environment. <br />David Lackner, Edgerton Street, opposed the rezoning. <br />drank Kath, McMenemy }toad, reported that his family owned the original <br />40 acres in this area.
