MINUTPS
PLANNING COMMLSSiON
MAY 9, 2002
Keis reported that he rides the bus to and from work every day and
indicated that his observation is that no one sits on the benches.
Gatzke stated that he did noC want to see the City spending money on the
purchase and maintenance of bus benches. Gatzke also indicated that he
was not convinced by the staff's reporC that the voice of the public has
been heard. Gatzke reported that he supports a partnership with U.S.
Bench in allowing them to install 8 to 10 benches in the City. Gatzke
agreed, however, that the C,ity's benches should be placed in
redevelopment areas.
Roycraft indicated that he is a small businessman and while he has never
used bus benches for advertising, many of his colleagues have. Roycraft
pointed out that in considering the cost of bus benches, one must also
consider what benches cost the City in terms of their overall appearance.
Roycraft also felt there are relative few bus benches needed in the City.
Roycraft indicated that City benches should be placed in redevelopment
areas, but suggested that a limited number on the fringes of the City under
private ownership might be a compromise.
Keis felt that the benches should be City benches, and agreed with
Dw'ay's earlier comments that the benches by sponsored by City
businesses or organizations.
I3arraclough again expressed concern about the "as requested" basis for
bus bench installation. Barraclough felt that any taxpayer requesting a
bench at a bus stop should be able to have a bench.
Keis suggested that while the City may not install a bench based on the
request of one person, it is likely that others would sign a petition for a
bench if the effort were organized. Keis suggested that perhaps a petition
signed by five people would be adequate for getting a bus bench installed.
Keis also pointed out that having benches sponsored by private businesses
or organizations would relieve the cost to the taxpayer For the bench itself,
although the City would still be responsible for maintenance costs.
Keis recommended that the City of Little Canada limit bus benches within
its boundaries to benches provided by the City under the following
conditions:
• City benches to be installed iu redevelopment areas;
• Qus benches in other areas to be installed on an "as
requested" basis and under the sponsorship of City
businesses, organizations, etc. with the benches to contain
-9-
