2016 Deer Management Plan
Little Canada, MN
Introduction
Little Canada maintains a deer management program involving education and periodic removal of deer. The goals of
the program are:
• To prevent starvation and disease from overpopulation of deer.
• To reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents involving deer.
• To preserve and protect the land of property owners.
• To maintain a population at a “socially acceptable” level.
Resident complaints regarding the growth in the deer population had been steadily increasing from 2008 through
2011. The complaints largely fell into two principal categories. One dealt with the concern that the growing deer
population in Little Canada was increasing the risk of car/deer accidents. The other involved damage to plants and
landscaping in the community.
Past aerial survey data collected by Ramsey County Parks & Recreation was reviewed. The northeast part of the City
(including a portion of Maplewood) had shown a dramatic growth in the deer population from 2003 to 2010. Control
efforts were started in this area in 2010 and the numbers have subsided per the following chart:
Year
2000
2001
2003
2004
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015
2016
Deer Count
18
35
14
20
54
52
51
71
81
69
Unable to Count
36
24
Unable to Count
21
