2778 Lakeview Ave
Roseville, MN 55113

Dear Little Canada City Council members,

My name is Renee Schott and my partner is Jeremy Higgins. Currently we own a house in
Roseville. I am a Staff Veterinarian at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (Roseville), I do relief
work for the Raptor Center (UMN St Paul Campus) and I teach around the country and
internationally on wildlife rehabilitation and medicine topics. Jeremy is PhD chemist at 3M
working in Research and Development . We have fallen in love with a property in Little Canada,
304 County Road B2 E and are looking to renovate this property.

We are scientists and animal lovers. Currently we have 1 dog (a treeing walker coonhound,
Nessie, pictured below), 2 indoor cats (Gila and Echidna), and 12 outdoor chickens (CC, Miss
Mo, Smooch, Smudge, Winstina, Badger, Helga, Broomhilda, Butterscotch, Maxine, BB and
Smee). All of our pets were strays or rescues and we realize first -hand what responsible pet
ownership means. Each of o ur pets has a story of being abused, neglected or lost and we are
committed to giving them a quality, forever home. All of our pets, including the chickens,
receive a high standard of veterinary and husbandry care and are treated like pets, not production
animals. I have been keeping chickens my entire life and provide all their veterinary care.

Our cats/dog are legal to keep in Little Canada under city codes,
however, chickens are illegal in the city limits. We are hoping to
apply for a text amendment to the code prohibiting chickens to allow
us on that specific property to keep our current pets. This specific
property is ideal for our family and the text amendment because the
house and all buildable land is at the center of these 6 acres (see black
X on map below) and is surrounded by wetlands that will be
impossible for us to build on. There will never be any neighbors that
will be able to hear or see our chickens.

You may think that we are suggesting amendments to make it easier fo r everyone to own
chickens but we are not. Most of our chickens were the result of inexperienced, ignorant, or
malicious chicken owners who did not provide adequate husbandry and/or medical care. The
X
2
