Residential zoned properties with a permit as outlined below.

(2) Roosters are prohibited.

(3) No breeding of chickens is allowed.

(4) Slaughtering of chickens on the property is prohibited.

(5) Leg banding Microchip of all chickens is required. The bands must identify the
owner and the owner’s address and telephone number.

(6) A separate coop is required to house the chickens. Coops must be constructed
and maintained to meet the following minimum standards:

• Located in the rear or side yard. Chicken Coops are not permitted in the
front yard.

• Setback at least 200 feet to any property line and in no case shall the coop be
located in front of the principal structure.

• Coops shall be setback a minimum of 30-feet from an adjacent principal
dwelling.

• Interior floor space – ten (10) square feet per bird.

• Interior height – six (6) feet to allow access for cleaning and maintenance.

• Doors – one (1) standard door to allow humans and chickens access to the
coop and one (1) for birds (if above ground level, must also provide a
stable ramp).

• Windows – one (1) square foot window per ten (10) square feet floor
space. Windows must be able to open for ventilation.

• Climate control – adequate ventilation and/or insulation to maintain the
coop temperature between 45 – 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

• Roosts – one and one-half (1 ½) inch 2 inch diameter or greater, located
eighteen (18) inches from the wall and two (2) to three (3) inches above
the floor.

• Rodent proof – coop construction and materials must be adequate to
prevent access by rodents.

• Coops shall be constructed and maintained in a workmanlike manner.

(7) A run and/or exercise yard is required to provide a minimum of 25 square feet per
chicken.

• Runs must be constructed and maintained to meet the following minimum
Comment [JJ3]: Prohibiting Roosters is
standard for cities surveyed.
Comment [RS4]: I have two roosters. I would
remove all “hen” and “rooster” and just leave it at
chicken. FYI, my hens are louder than my
roosters…..
Comment [JJ5]: Staff would support changing
from Leg Banding to Microchip. City Council should
consider that staff believes this will be a costly
expense for residents if microchipping is required.
Comment [RS6]: Bands can pose a danger if not
sized, applied and maintained properly. I would
recommend to add “microchip” as an acceptable
alternative.
Comment [JJ7]: Staff supports 1 standard door
for both chickens and humans.
Comment [RS8]: Chickens could use the human
door as well (and it could be shut at night) so a
chicken size door should not be a requirement.
Chickens would prefer to use the larger door
Comment [JJ9]: Staff could review, but this
requirement ties to the floor area required per bird
so we’ve got to determine a reasonable standard for
any number of chickens (i.e. 1-12).
Comment [RS10]: So with 12 birds I would need
12 sq feet of windows? This is also excessive
Comment [JJ11]: Staff modified to 2” as
suggested.
Comment [RS12]: You want 2” in the winter
Comment [JJ13]: Staff will review roost
requirements further.
Comment [RS14]: I don’t understand this
requirement. Roosts are often fixed to the walls
and usually higher than that off the floor. I can
write some better roost requirements but it might
get complicated (i.e. they should be higher but you
will need a ladder/stairs for chickens that cannot fly
that high…)
11
