MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
May 5, 2016
The Recreation Supervisor reported the City-wide Garage Sale would take
place May 19th, 20th, 21st. She explained registration is due by May 9th and
numbers were a little down, but was hoping more people would sign up
online over the weekend. The Recreation Supervisor noted 35 households
were currently signed up.

The Recreation Supervisor reported the Summer Activities Flyer has gone
out to the schools and Archery, Fishing Fun, and Firearm Safety were all
included. The Recreation Supervisor explained fishing fun wasn’t able to
be offered last year because not enough signed up for the class, but was
hopeful it would work out this summer. The program is offered through
the DNR. The Recreation Supervisor explained the firearm safety class
would be a little later in August this year due to scheduling conflicts for
the field shoot.

The Recreation Supervisor reported the next Marketplace Morning Talk
would be Wednesday May 11th on Cooking Lite. Chu asked what the
average attendance for the event was. The Recreation Supervisor
explained the event is for residents 55 and over, and attendance was
between 30 and 45 people.

The Recreation Supervisor reported the Farmers Market would begin June
20th. She explained there were already nine vendors signed up which is
double last year’s numbers. The Recreation Supervisor explained the
Farmers Market will start in the marketplace for a few weeks until the
Garden Center closes, and then will be moved over to the Hardware Hank
Parking Lot.

Horwath shared an idea with the Commission to apply to test out a Pump
Track. He explained it is like a small portable, semi-permanent BMX
Track. The track is for bicycles, rollerblades, scooters, and skateboards.
The track helps riders move, in that riders use their body to speed up or
slow down, but there is no need to push or pedal. He continued the track is
going on a nationwide tour and they are accepting applications to decide
the route of their tour. Horwath is working to get the Pump Track to a Park
in South Minneapolis on July 28th and is hoping the track could come to
Little Canada the day before or after. He thought it would be a great way
to continue providing opportunities to the community. The Commission
discussed putting in an application to come on the 27th so as not to conflict
with Canadian Days. The Director liked the idea, but noted the event
would not be able to take place in Spooner Park. Horwath agreed and
thought Pioneer Park would be a good place for the track to be tested.
Horwath explained the application was due today, but would work to
submit an application tonight. Horwath noted there would be no cost for
the track to come for the day. Ray wondered if the track could be set up at
the lower Eli Fields. The Director and Horwath agreed that would be a
