STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: October 6, 2016

RE: Replacement of Wood Planks on Gervais Mill Park Bridges

There are three pedestrian bridges in Gervais Mill Park. They are steel structures with wood planks as
the decking. The bridges and wood planks are still original so they are about 25 years old. The wood
planks have begun to deteriorate and there are holes in some of them. Staff budgeted $10,000 for 2016
to replace the wood planks.
Staff talked to the bridge manufacturer and got the specifications for the planks, which are treated pine.
They submitted a quote of $11,554 for the planks plus $500 for freight charges. Staff then talked to
Scherer Brothers Lumber Company and provided the specifications. Scherer Brothers submitted a
quote of $4914 for the planks and no freight charges.
The old planks will be removed and the new ones will be installed using staff and/or the ICWC crew.
Staff recommends approving the purchase of wood planks for the three Gervais Mill Park pedestrian
bridges from Scherer Brothers Lumber Company at a price of $4914.
