MINUTES OF THE WORKSHOP MEETING <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />LITTLE CANADA, MINNESOTA <br />MAY 10, 2017 <br />Pursuant to due call and notice thereof a workshop meeting of the City Council <br />of Little Canada, Minnesota was convened on the 10th day of May, 2017 in the <br />Conference Room of the City Center located at 515 Little Canada Road in said <br />City. <br />Mayor John Keis called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and the following <br />members of the City Council were present at roll call: <br />CITY COUNCIL: Mayor <br />Mr. John Keis <br />Council Member <br />Mr. Christian Torkelson <br />Council Member <br />Mr. Tom Fischer <br />Council Member <br />Mr. Mike McGraw <br />Council Member <br />Mr. Rick Montour <br />ALSO PRESENT: City Administrator <br />Mr. Joel Hanson <br />Fire Chief <br />Mr. Don Smiley <br />Asst. Fire Chief <br />Mr. Steve Morelan <br />Fire Department <br />Mr. Kevin Keenan <br />Fire Department <br />Mr. Pat Keenan <br />Fire Department <br />Mr. Kurt Frison <br />City Clerk <br />Ms. Heidi Heller <br />MEETING WITH Mayor Keis stated that the purpose of this evening's workshop is for the annual <br />THE LITTLE meeting with the City Council and the Little Canada Fire Department. <br />CANADA FIRE <br />DEPARTMENT Fire Chief Smiley explained that this is the annual meeting to review the past <br />year of Fire Department activities. He stated that in the last year there have been <br />five retirements and those people had almost 150 years of combined service. He <br />explained that they recently took on three new members who are now going <br />through their training and will be on probation for the first year. He stated that <br />they have had very few recruits not stay on after training even though it is a very <br />big time commitment. Keenan stated that this year they saw their lowest <br />number of applicants, and predicts that it will continue to get harder to recruit <br />local residents. He noted that Little Canada has a high amount of rental housing <br />and those residents are usually more transient and do not get as involved in the <br />community they live in. Chief Smiley stated that there are currently 30 <br />members on the department which is where they have decided is a good number <br />to be at. <br />
