STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: May 5, 2017

RE: Seasonal Employee Hires

The Public Works Department uses seasonal employees to help during the busy spring and summer
months. These employees are an invaluable tool in helping us keep up with mowing, field dragging,
weeding, sewer jetting, street patching, and a multitude of other tasks that need to be completed. The
City has been fortunate to have some excellent seasonal employees over the years and that tradition
continues to this day.
This year seven seasonal workers have been hired to work full time as well as one additional worker
who will be helping out on weekends and Canadian Days. There are three college students, one who is
graduating from high school in early-June, one who just completed Air Force basic training and
technical school and is awaiting his next training school, one who is completing his junior year of high
school, and one who is retired. The weekend helper has graduated from college and has a full-time job.
Five of them are returning from last year. Returning seasonals are extremely valuable in that they give
us continuity. They don’t require as much training and are able to help the new seasonals learn the
ropes.
Below is a list of this year’s seasonal employees:
Tom Hemstreet – returning for second year (also a rink helper)
Mac Holm – returning for third year as weekend help
Dylan Barrett – returning for third year
Alex Evenson – returning for third year
Willie Bosch – returning for second year
Mitchell Krieger – first year
Austin Johnson – first year
Brett Barrett – first year

It should also be pointed out that five of the seasonals are Little Canada residents. Residents are
always given priority when selections are made.
