SAVAGE LAKE ACCESS SURVEY WHAT: Should City Create a Pedestrian/Small Craft Access Point to West Savage Lake? HOW: Likely creating a natural trail from the Lake Street/Lakeshore Avenue area utilizing public right of way. WHY: Before embarking on a project such as this, the City wants the input of people in the area to help us determine if this is a worthwhile undertaking. A resident in the West Savage Lake area has asked the City to consider creating a public access point to West Savage Lake to provide greater recreational opportunities for the community. It is envisioned that the access would consist of a wood chipped, pedestrian trail near the intersection of Lake Street & Lakeshore Avenue down to Savage. It would enable people to carry small water craft to the lake. No docks or other features are contemplated to be constructed in conjunction with this possible project. Another access point was also considered at the corner of Old County road C & Lakeshore. (See attached map for both locations) The reason the Lake Street/Lakeshore Avenue option was chosen is based on two primary factors. 1. On-street parking on the Old C/Lakeshore Avenue would prove difficult. Some on-street parking is possible on Lake Street adjacent to Nadeau Park. If necessary, some off-street parking could be constructed on the east end of Nadeau Park. 2. The grade from the street to the lake is less steep at Lake Street/Lakeshore Avenue making access less difficult. To aid in the review of this potential project, the Little Canada Parks & Recreation Commission is conducting a survey of the area’s residents to gauge the level of interest/support. The area being survey is bound by I-35E on the east, Highway 36 on the south, Canadian Pacific railroad tracks on the west, and County Road C/Little Canada Road on the north. The survey will be done electronically via Survey Monkey at the following web address: www.xxxxxxxxxxxx. To view the survey on-line and enter your responses, please go to that web address. If you do not have access to the internet, you can complete the attached survey document and mail a hard copy to us that will be added to the tabulation. This evaluation is in a very preliminary stage. No formal design or cost estimates have been prepared. However, a rough estimate for clearing and installing a wood chipped trail down to the lake would run between $5,000 and $10,000. We hope you will take the time to participate in the survey. Once the survey results are finalized, we will determine the next steps in the public involvement process.
