STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission Members

FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator

DATE: February 24, 2017

RE: Pickle Ball Court Project

Before moving forward with the pickle ball court project, staff wanted some input from the
commission. We have done some research (an article is attached that provides some additional
background). We also budgeted $17,250 for pickle ball courts in 2017.

Here are some of the questions we have:
 Are we repurposing a tennis court or constructing a new court?
 Are any of our current tennis courts underutilized?
 If we repurpose, do we utilize dual markings and an adjustable net to either tennis or pickle ball
can be played on the surface.
 If we re-purpose, where do we do it (we have two courts at Spooner and two courts at Pioneer)?
 How many courts do we want to create? In re-purposing one tennis court, we can create 4
pickle ball courts.
 If we repurpose, do we want to install netting between the tennis courts to prevent balls from
rolling too far away (I have heard this is a big concern of pickle ballers)?
 Is there too much risk in building a new court given we do not know the interest level?
 If we build a new facility, how many courts are we building and where do we build them?
 An advantage in re-purposing existing courts is we plan to re-surface out tennis courts this year
anyway and that is one of the larger costs.
 Other???

The Commission’s input/direction is needed to ensure we make the best decision to move this project
forward.
