STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: August 4, 2017

RE: Purchase of Large Wheel Kit for Sewer Camera

As you know the City purchased a sewer camera and trailer last spring. The vendor, Flexible Pipe, has
offered to sell us a large wheel kit that was used for demonstrations at a $2,000 discount. The kit
enables the camera to be used in large sanitary and storm sewer lines. Staff believes that it will be very
useful for inspecting large corrugated metal and plastic storm sewer lines in the city. The metal pipes
tend to deteriorate on the bottom and cause the whole system to fail. Staff has also seen cases of
concrete pipe sections separating and causing sinkholes. The large line kit will enable staff to get a
better handle on the large pipes in the city. The retail price of a new large line kit is $5,016 and
Flexible has offered to sell the demonstration kit for $3,016.
Staff recommends authorizing the purchase of the demonstration large line wheel kit from Flexible
Pipe for $3,016. The funds will come from the Water and Sewer Capital Fund.
