STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator

DATE: August 4, 2017

RE: 2017 Deer Control Program

We did not allow any deer hunting in 2016. In 2017, the County was not able to do an aerial
survey due to the lack of snow cover. However, the City has received some comments about
increasing deer numbers in the area south of St. John’s Cemetery and in the NE quadrant of
the City. In past years, we have allowed a hunt but capped the total number of deer taken at
10. Perhaps that is an appropriate course of action this year.

Attached is a draft of the 2017 control program. The Council should provide direction
relative to whether or not a control hunt should be allowed this year. If a hunt is to be
allowed, then a capped number likely makes sense given we do not have current data on
the deer population.
