STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: August 31, 2017
RE: Gilbertson Field Improvement Update
Back in May an update was provided regarding the Gilbertson Field upgrade project scheduled for 2017.
Since then more costs have been determined and the scope of the project has been changed. This is an
update on the current status of the project.
Fence:
Staff received two quotes to replace all of the fencing around the field, including the backstop. Modern
Fence submitted the low quote at $25,875 for black vinyl-coated fencing. That quote provides for a
hood on the backstop, which is similar to the current backstop at the field. Another option is to remove
the hood and have a taller, straight up-and-down backstop, which would cost $1600 less. The LCRA
has indicated that they would like to see the hood on the backstop. Staff is also considering installing a
product called Fenceguard underneath the fence in the outfield and along Eli Road at a cost of around
$2500. This product makes maintenance of the grass around the fence easier as it eliminates the need to
trim along the entire stretch of fence, which is very time-consuming. The Fenceguard product allows a
mower to keep the area by the fence looking nice. An information sheet has been attached.
Concrete:
The scope of the concrete work has been changed to include the entire area from the player bench areas
to behind the backstop and underneath the new bleachers, which will be installed as part of the project.
See the attached exhibit showing the concrete limits. A request for quotes was sent to the contractors
who had previously bid on the original concrete work. To date one quote has been received in the amount
of $14,950. The contractor who provided the quote was very competitive in the first round of quotes so
it should be safe to assume the final concrete cost will be close to $15,000. Staff will be sure to get at
least one more quote and hopefully more.
Field Repair:
Staff received three quotes for repairing the field. Frattalone Companies submitted the low quote with
a time and materials bid not to exceed $2500. The pitching area will be re-defined and made into a
circular area, the infield grass will be cut back to restore the proper base paths, the outfield grass edge
where it meets the infield dirt will be re-established, and ag lime will be added to the infield and the
entire field will be re-graded. This work will occur after the concrete and fencing is completed.
