individuals could use for transporting water to the park. A challenge for this area is that Canadian
Days utilizes this area of the park.
In surveying neighboring communities, the size of an off-leash dog park ranges from .5 acres to
7.5 acres. For reference, the size of the Demont Hockey rink where the seasonal off-leash dog
park is currently is approximately .3 acres. Amenities, such as water, benches, and shade structures
vary by each location. The height of the fence varies between 4 feet and 6 feet, but 4 feet seems
to be what the majority of parks use in the area. The majority of neighboring parks do not have a
water source and advertise that dog owners are responsible for bring their own water.
Fiscal Consideration
The size of the permanent off-leash dog park will greatly influence the overall cost. Preliminary
estimates are $10,000 - $30,000. Estimated costs:
• Black vinyl chain-link fencing - $27.00/LF
• Signage - $500
• Benches - $500 - $2,000
• Shade Structures - $2,000 - $5,000
• Water Source - $100 - $5,000
Yearly maintenance and operating costs would be minimal for an off-leash dog park. Possible
partnerships could include:
• Local Veterinarian Clinics
• Business Sponsorship
• Humane Society
• Neighborhood/Community Groups
Next Steps
Staff is looking for discussion and direction from the commission on if a permanent off-leash dog
park should be pursued at this time.
