Options:
It should be noted that a flashing crosswalk does not guarantee safety for pedestrians. There are still
drivers who are unaware or inattentive and would miss the warning. For most drivers the flashing
signal would be of particular help when it is dark out as they really standout in those conditions.
Staff believes it is a public safety concern on Little Canada Road due to the curvature of the road, the
high volume of vehicle traffic, and the increased number of elderly pedestrians who use the west
crosswalk. The flashing signal on the McMenemy crosswalk south of Little Canada Road was
installed due to the increased number of elderly folks using the crosswalk.
Staff believes there are three options for the Little Canada Road crosswalks and will proceed with
installation based on the Council’s decision.
1. Install the flashing crosswalk as originally proposed at the west mid-block crosswalk.

2. Install the flashing crosswalk at the McMemeny intersection. Please note that the signs on the
south side of Little Canada Road are mounted on the utility pole so staff would have to figure
out how to install the push button and flashing sign on the pole or would have to move
everything off of the pole and onto a square tube post, which would entail drilling into the
concrete sidewalk.

3. Purchase an additional flashing crosswalk and install one at each crosswalk. (approximate cost
would be $5200).
