southwest side. Chair Miller asked if artificial turf could be installed for
the soccer field at Pioneer Park to improve playability. Councilman
Fischer asked if any games had to be cancelled due to weather and the clay
soil. The Community Services Manager stated games did have to be
cancelled to avoid ruining the field for the whole season. He noted there
had been discussion about creating a multiuse field, but staff had to be
very selective because of the clay soil. Kost noted turf could be installed
or the field could be reengineered with sand. Staff present were unsure on
the cost difference between the two options. The Parks Maintenance
Supervisor noted the field can only be used by City permitted teams, and
others had to be told to leave because of worries about field conditions.

Kost asked the Commission to discuss their ideas for the park’s central
shelter. Schletty noted it was unfortunate the space couldn’t be better used
in its current configuration. The Commission agreed the shelter played an
important role in the park, but noted they were limited due to ADA
compliance. Kost explained the shelter could stay as is, but the upper level
could not be used for public events. He stated if the shelter were updated,
in addition to standard maintenance, the shelter would have to be brought
into ADA compliance, by installing an elevator.

Respectfully submitted,

Anna Leibel
