MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNI', 12, 2002
by management from Montreal Courts indicated that they would like a bus
bench iu their complex and would prefer a bench without advertising on it.
Scalze indicated that the issue is somewhat similar to that of organized
collection in that it was ditficult to make a change from the existing
system. However, once that change was made it was beneficial to the City
and its citizens. Scalze stated that she would like to make the move to
City-owned bus benches as a way to beautify the City and promote
community identity.
LaValle indicated that he received a call from some seniors who would
like a bus shelter on Demout Street. LaValle suggested that Metro Transit
be contacted about this request.
Danielson reported that to his knowledge three other cities have tried a
city-sponsored bus bench program and have been unsuccessful. U.S.
Bench was then contacted to take over the program. Danielson felt their
request for six bus benches was reasonable and had merit, and asked the
Council to consider the request Danielson again felt that maintenance of
bus benches will he a big issue for the City.
Fahey indicated That he agreed with City stafT's recommendation and felt
that the City should sponsor bus benches at this point. if maintenance
becomes overwhelming or other problems arise, the City can allow for
private bus benches. Anderson agreed, but asked what use the City would
have for the benches it purchased if a later decision is to allow for private
benches. Fahey pointed out that the benches could be relocated to park
areas.
Fahey pointed out that under a City bus bench program the f rst criteria for
beach placement will be a demonstrated need for the bench due to
signiFcant ridership at a particular location versus a private bus bench
program whose criteria is to generate advertising revenue. Fahey also
noted that there is no need for bus benches on the Little Canada side of
Rice Street, since most people boarding the bus are on the Roseville side
of Rice Street since buses are bound for downtown. Fahey suggested that
if the City sponsored program does not work, the City would consider
U.S. Bench as a prime candidate for a private program given their long
history in the City.
Mrs. Scalze introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RF.SOLUT/ON NO. 2002-6-131-ACCEP%7NG TFIE
RECOMMEND~1 TION OF CITY STAFF' RELA %'/VE TO THE
