STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: March 7, 2018

RE: Blasting and Painting Metal on Little Canada Road Obelisks

The red decorative metal on the five obelisks along Little Canada Road has faded over the years and
needs to be blasted and re-painted. Staff received quotes from three companies to perform this work.
Fresh Blast quoted $1900 for the first one and then a price to be determined for the other four.
Central Sandblasting quoted a price of $2975 for all five obelisks.
Brighton Sandblasting quoted a price of $2500 for all five obelisks.
Based on the quotes received staff recommends Brighton Sandblasting perform the work for a price of
$2500. They will blast each piece, epoxy prime them, and paint them with an oil-based polyurethane
paint that should last a number of years without fading.
Public Works staff will removed the metal parts from the obelisks and deliver them to Brighton
Sandblasting in Blaine and then pick them up when they are finished and re-install them. The plan is
to do the work in three stages so only one of three metal bands are missing from each obelisk at a time.
