Based on the turning movements I don’t think you could get 4 buses to line up on the north side <br />unless they are going to parallel park the west one or two in there, which I doubt. Can you please verify <br />the number that can be staged on the north fence line or explain how they will stack? <br /> <br />Response 2 <br />The bus staging diagram submitted in the September 4 Traffic Study has been revised. The revised <br />diagram is shown on Figure A3. As shown on the revised diagram, it is proposed that the nose of the <br />north/south median (adjacent to the fifth bus as it stages along the western side of the school building) <br />will be modified to accommodate the right-turn. <br /> <br />It is felt that modifications to the median may not be necessary, but, nonetheless, AFSA is prepared to <br />modify the median if buses have difficulty accomplishing the right-turn and comfortably falling in queue. <br />There are two facts supporting this statement. <br /> <br />1. The turning radii described on Figure A3 are for a 23-WB school bus. The buses used by AFSA <br />have slightly shorter wheel bases; approximately 22 feet – 9 inches. Thus the turning radii <br />shown on Figure A3 are slightly wider than what is actually anticipated. As illustrated, a 23-WB <br />school bus will be able to accomplish the right turn from the west side of the school building and <br />fit behind the fourth bus in queue, after the first bus in queue has departed the site. <br /> <br />2. AFSA staff brought its school buses to the site on Country Drive and tested their ability to <br />accomplish the right-turn from the western side of the school building. They learned that the <br />school buses can accomplish the right-turn without impacting the north/south median and <br />without impacting any of the parking stalls that nose-in against the north property line. <br /> <br />As shown on Figure A3, four school buses will queue along the northern edge of the northern fence line <br />in the order in which they arrive, and the fifth bus to arrive will stage along the western side of the <br />school building while it waits for the first bus to arrive to depart the site. Experience at the other two <br />campuses has shown AFSA staff that the order of arrival is predictable, and quite typically Bus # 1 will <br />arrive just ahead of Bus # 2, and Bus # 2 will arrive just ahead of Bus # 3, etc. If there is an unforeseen <br />situation that impacts the arrival of buses, the bus that arrives first will assume the Number 1 position, <br />the bus that arrives second will assume the Number 2 position, etc. Consequently, the school buses will <br />simply wait their turn in queue, and there will be no parallel parking maneuvers. <br /> <br />The order in which buses arrive is not a concern for two reasons. First, AFSA staff will be present in the <br />playground to monitor students as they alight and board the buses. Second, all students who are <br />transported by bus will pass through the enclosed playground after alighting and before boarding the <br />buses.
