STAFF REPORT
TO:Mayor Keis and Members of the City Council
FROM:Bryce Shearen, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager
DATE:January 4, 2019
RE:Parks & Recreation Temporary Intern
BACKGROUND:
To fulfill some of the more immediate needs of the Parks and Recreation Department in the
interim as staff determines if changes should be made in the current position vacancy. While
staff assesses those needs, staff is proposing to utilize an intern.
The details of the internship are that it would be a three to four month paid internship, to a
student studying in the parks and recreation curriculum or similar field to coincide with the
spring semester. The main objectives of the intern would be to learn administrative practices,
develop and implement a new program or programs, and work with staff to develop marking
strategies and promotional plans. The individual will provide staff support to the Parks and
Recreation Department and perform other duties or responsibilities as assigned. The internship
opportunity would provide the student with professional experiences that emphasize
administrative and management skills, as well as leadership and creative development.
Minimum qualifications would consist of:
Current student or current student or recent graduate of a Parks and Recreation program,
or related field.
Knowledge of and/or experience working with recreation programs and activities.
Computer proficiency: including Microsoft Office programs.
Demonstrates strong problem solving abilities and techniques.
Ability to work both independently and with people of all ages and abilities.
Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Valid Driver's License and good driving record.
Staff currently has a new program project that we would like to see implemented, a current
program offering that could be enhanced, and other administrative duties if time allows. Staff
believes these duties could be done in approximately 10 - 12 hours per week during normal
business hours (but may include some evening and weekend hours) at $12.50 - $13.00 per hour
for an estimated total of approximately $2,000 - $3,000.
SOURCE OF FUNDS:
The money needed for the paid internship would be from the General Fund (101) in lieu of the
wages for the Recreation Supervisor.
