<br />Tobacco Licenses currently issued: <br />Tobacco Stores: The Hookah Hideout and Little Canada Smoke Shop <br />General Sales & Display: Gas-n-Go, Little Canada bp, Hoggsbreath, Tierney Liquors and <br />Kath SuperAmerica <br /> <br />Staff worked with ANSR and the Public Health Law Office at Mitchell Hamline School of Law to <br />review our existing tobacco code language and draft an ordinance that makes the necessary updates. <br />They also review the code for best practices, state law compliance and clarity. The proposed <br />Ordinance 838 amends each section that addresses the legal purchasing age to increase it from 18 to 21 <br />years old, updates definitions that govern the regulation of tobacco and tobacco products. The City is <br />still covered under the State law that prohibits smoking under the age of 18. The law office also <br />recommended adding language for due process and severability. <br /> <br />State Statute requires a written notice to tobacco retailers 30 days prior to Council action on this <br />tobacco ordinance. Letters were mailed to the seven tobacco license holders on April 2, 2019 and <br />Council action would occur on May 8, 2019. <br /> <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: <br />Hold the Public Hearing and discuss the proposed Ordinance that would raise the legal age to <br />purchase tobacco and tobacco related products in Little Canada to age 21.
