MINUTES
Parks & Recreatimt Commission
August 2, 2001
CONCERTS Horwath stated that the concerts are now over and they went well. However, attendance did
not increase from last year.
The Commission felt that one sign by the fire station is all that is needed for next year. They
also discussed having the Review place a flyer in their newspaper for distribution to our
residents.
The Director recommended evaluating the whole program to see if changes could be made to
draw more people next year. It is difficult to justify the expenditure to some bands with low
attendances.
PROJECTS Sanders reported on the following projects:
UPDATE
Rondeau Park -The Commission was shown plans for the new park. Sanders
recommended the grading/seeding portion of the project be bid infornially. Other
improvements will come later. The Commission discussed the possibility of a
groundbreaking ceremony next spring when the play area is installed. The Director
stated that the depth of the pond was reported incorrectly at the last meeting. The depth
is actually only 2.4-3.5 feet.
Water Works Trail Connection -- The St. Paul Water Department gave their approval
for the connection. This project will be finished this summer.
Gervais Mill Park Entrance -This project will be finished by Public Works this
summer.
Pump House Restoration -This project is underway. However, late registrations are still being
accepted. Flyers on the soccer/volleyball registration and on the summer youth trips were
distributed to the Commission.
Registrations are being accepted for the following adult activities -senior exercise, 55
alive driving classes, and fall softball.
Xcel Energy is clearing trees in the Thunder Bay area. Bnish is encroaching on the trails
so they are clearing the brush back. The city has been working with them to keep as
much of the desirable trees/brush as possible. Xcel has easements for the property and
can clear it as necessary.
OTHER Schabacker stated that he attended the first 694/Rice Bridge Task Force meeting in
Shoreview. This meeting was essentially a brainstorming session to collect everyone's ideas.
He stated that he suggested separated pedestrian and bike lane crossings be installed on both
sides of the bridge. The next meeting will beheld on September 5. However, Schabacker
stated that he has a conflict that night and cannot attend.
