MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
October 5, 2000
• Bids have been sent back out for the Gervais Mill Pond Entrance with a June 1
completion date.
• Jackson park sketches are in the works and will be ready for the January 4 Commission
meeting with the public.
FASTPITCH The Director stated that the City's fastpitch program is going to be combined with Roseville.
He apologized for bypassing the Commission before presenting this matter to the Council.
However, he explained that Little Canada is the only metro city that still runs fastpitch. Most
fastpitch programs are run by associations. Tryouts are held to determine the level of play of
each registrant. As a result, some registrants have to be turned down. The Director stated
that this is not consistent with the definition of recreational level activities, and he did not
like the City being put in the position of turning down children. He felt that combining our
program with Roseville's would provide more opportunity for our kids to play. He stated
that three parents from the Little Canada Fastpitch Program will be members of their board.
Their board currently consists of eight members. Roseville will be renaming their fastpitch
program from Roseville Fastpitch Association to Roseville Area Fastpitch Association. They
chose not to use "Little Canada" in the name since there are several other cities involved in
the program. "Roseville Area" was chosen from the school district name that is the
geographic area that the boundaries of the association are made up of.
The Director asked for input from the Commission in order to make this transition smooth.
Sackett Glaser recommended publishing this change early so parents would be aware of it for
the 2001 registration. The Director stated that will be done.
Anderson asked the Director to keep the Commission updated on the transition.
RECREATION The Director reported on the following items:
REPORT
• Basketball and fall gymnastics registrations are still being taken. Gymnastics will begin
next week.
• The adult fall softball league just finished. Nine teams participated this year.
• Soccer is going fine. However, there were some problems with the automatic activation
on the lights at Pioneer. Those problems are being worked out.
ADJOURN Dareielson recommended that the rneeti~ag be adjourned.
Motion seconded by Larson.
Motion carried 7 - 0.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:58 p.m.
Resp ct filly subn 'tted,
Kris Pechman
