~~~~~ihc ~..ossoci.ar~s
Memorandum iGll! HORIA
TO: Little Canada Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Lee Elfering, City Engineer
DATE: August 8, 2008
RE: SW Trunk Watermain Improvements
Change Order #1
Backaround
The attached change order addresses four changes to the construction of the above
reference project. Allfourare outlined and explained below:
As part of the Viking Drive project some of the ditch boulevard areas were filled for
easier access to the sanitary sewer manholes for cleaning. Just east of the railroad
bridge an area was filled that required an extension be added to an old hydrant for its
continued use. During the installation of the new watermain this hydrant lead was
exposed and in conflict with the new watermain. Because of the excess depth of the
hydrant we directed the contractor to remove the entire hydrant and install a new hydrant
at normal depth to minimize future impacts and costs if work on the hydrant was
necessary.
The second change modified the connection to the existing 12" watermain on the east
side of the railroad tracks just north of Viking Drive. Upon review of field valve locations
after excavation it was determined that the installation of a standard tee connection
would require water service to be shut off to alt properties south of TH 36. Due to the
business impacts it was determined that a wet tap connection should be made to allow
this line to remain in operation. The savings of the tee connection and associated
fittings are not accounted for in the change order. The valve locations as determined in
the field also resulted in the addition of a 12" valve for additional isolation ability in the
future.
The final item addressed in this change order is to compensate the Contractor for the
extra time required to locate the existing watermain on Stephanie Court. The watermain
location on the asbuilt drawing was 10 feet west of the sanitary sewer and the location
eventually found was approximately 20 feet east of the sanitary sewer.
Summary and Recommendations
Due to the conditions in the field and the requested changes additional compensation
should be provided to the Contractor. We have reviewed the time and material costs
submitted for this extra work and would recommend approval of Change Order #1 in the
amount of $11,992.42.
