STAFF REPORT
TO:Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM:Bryce Shearen, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager
DATE:May 7, 2020
RE:Parks & Recreation COVID-19 Updates
Little Canada Parks and Recreation is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our
participants, staff and community. Staff has been rotating between working remotely and at city
offices, this has allowed staff to make sure they are still available to the residents while staying
safe. The ongoing and fluid COVID-19 situation has required several modifications to
operations.
FACILITIES
All City facilities have been closed to the public until the Stay At Home Executive Order
is over at a minimum.
Rental facilities (park shelters and Old Fire Hall) are closed and will not be open until at
least June.
PARKS
Little Canada Parks and Trails remain open to the public. Signs have been placed around
the park system to remind users they must maintain a social distance.
After multiple emails and phone call of concerns over the large groups playing basketball
and not adhering to the social distancing order, it was decided to remove the basketball
hoops on Monday, April 27, to deter groups from forming and to show the City is doing
what is necessary to champion good health and reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Playgrounds are posted with signage that they are closed.
Athletic fields are unavailable for organized activities until further notice.
PROGRAMS & EVENTS
The 5K Sap Run has been canceled.
The City-wide Garage Sale has been postponed. Staff is looking into potential late
summer or early fall dates to reschedule.
Spring programs were canceled and a decision on summer programs is expected mid-
May.
At Home and social distance friendly programs have been and are continued to be created
to help keep residents engaged. These can be found at
https://www.littlecanadamn.org/583/Recreation-Activities
Movie in the Park and Ice Cream Social events are still being evaluated and have not
been canceled at this time.
