TO:Mayor Keis and Members of the City Council
STAFF REPORT
FROM:Corrin Wendell, AICP, Community Development Director
DATE:June 24, 2020
RE:Pioneer Park Master Plan – Resilient Communities Project
BACKGROUND
The partnership with the University of Minnesota Resilient Communities Project (RCP)
program students is underway and there are five graduate students who have anxiously signed
up to be a part of the park planning process. The graduate students will participate in
community engagement efforts for the Pioneer Park planning process this summer.
Staff is looking forward to working with the students from the University and implementing the
following schedule between June and September, items include:
Kickoff Meeting
Site Visits
Community Engagement
Research
Regular check-ins
Mid-Project Reviews
Final Presentation
STUDENT PROFILES
Each student participating in the RCP project has provided their background and interest in
serving Little Canada:
Kendra Klenz
I am a Landscape Architecture Master's student going into my third year this fall. I have a BA
from St. Olaf College in Economics and Environmental Studies, where I focused on restoration
ecology and environmental economics and policy. Broadly, I am interested in public space design
and access. RCP was most attractive to me because of the opportunity to work across disciplines
and on a real project. I am looking forward to working together to figure out new ways to reach
out to, and communicate with park users (and perhaps not-yet users) during this strange new
reality and developing a plan that serves current and future residents well.
