STAFF REPORT TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council FROM: Heidi Heller, City Clerk DATE: June 24, 2020 RE: Canadian Days Fireworks ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED Discuss holding and funding a firework show in conjunction with modified Canadian Days activities on Saturday, August 1, and potentially approve the 2020 fireworks contract with RES Specialty Pyrotechnics, Inc. BACKGROUND Due to COVID-19 and social distancing requirements, the Canadian Days Committee has decided not to do most of the regular activities that have been done over a multi-day celebration, but are instead working on a simplified plan that would only be one day on Saturday, August 1. They would still like to include the same fireworks show as has been done in the past at Spooner Park for a cost of $7,500. Many cities in the area that have festivals and/or fireworks scheduled in June and July have canceled their events this year. Staff checked to see what surrounding communities were doing with their summer events: • Arden Hills does not have any festivals or fireworks • North Oaks does not have any festivals or fireworks • Shoreview – canceled June festival • Roseville – canceled most of June & July Rosefest events • Maplewood – canceled or rescheduled all large events through July, no July 4th fireworks • Mounds View - canceled festival although may still have some events at a bigger park • White Bear Lake – festival has been postponed until August and scaled back with some events canceled, the 4th of July fireworks are rescheduled to August 21 • Vadnais Heights – mid-August festival & fireworks have not yet been canceled, but likely will be very scaled back or canceled • North St. Paul – canceled events in June, are holding Food Truck nights & Music in the Park events starting in July & the downtown parade in September - they do not appear to have a city festival or fireworks
