COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT Department Overview The Community Development Department provides direction and vision for the future economic and physical growth of the City of Little Canada. The Planning Division carries out the objectives and policies of the Comprehensive Plan to enhance the quality of life, facilitate orderly growth and development in the community through zoning administration, land use application processing, and long-range planning. The Protective Inspections Division is responsible for the enforcement of the adopted building codes. The Division also provides quality customer service, technical information, permit processing, inspections, and code enforcement to ensure compliance with State and local standards for livability and the integrity of the community and surrounding area. Our Mission Our mission is to serve as a resource for residents and business owners in an effort to find solutions for their property needs. Service Areas •Zoning and Land Use •Economic Development •Building Permits •Planning •Code Enforcement •Building Inspections •Rental Housing Inspections •Comprehensive Plan Implementation •Staff liaison to Planning Commission 2021 Departmental Goals •Complete Zoning Code Update •Finish implementing building permit and license software •Hire part-time Code Enforcement/Rental Inspection employee for Code Enforcement, Rental Housing License, and including Rental Inspections process Budgetary Commentary Planning Budget - The Planning Budget includes funds for the execution for the incremental update of the Zoning Code for the City with additional review within the City Code and Subdivision Ordinance in order to align research and modifications to help advance the vision and implementation of the adopted 2040 Comprehensive Plan. Inspections Budget - The Inspections Budget includes an additional Code Enforcement/Rental Inspection position for enhanced rental inspections and code enforcement activities. While this position was included in the 2020 Budget, it was not filled in 2020 due to COVID-19. The current proposal is to keep this position unfilled until April 2021, in order to realize additional savings.
