With the new system new radios were needed to work on the new
system. Ramsey County provided all of our radios in 2004 after receiving a grant from
the Federal Government. In 2015 our radios reached their end of life and the
manufacturer started to discontinue making replacement parts. We were able to
stretch out the useful life for another 5 years. The replacement is in the General Capital
Improvement Fund budget for 2021. In the past year we had several radios break or
malfunction and we have not been trying to repair them since the replacement was
coming up.

A firefighter’s radio is one of the most important pieces of equipment next to the self-
contained breathing apparatus.

The radios will be purchased thru the State of Minnesota contract. The time from order
to delivery will be about a month.
SOURCE OF FUNDS: The radios will be funded with The General Capital
Improvement Fund (Fund 400). $192,000 was budgeted in 2021 for radio
replacement.

Here is a summary of the costs:
New mobile and portable radios and related accessories $ 179,040.60
(Vendor is Ancom Communications)
Removal of old mobile radios and installation of new radios $ 12,500.00
(Other costs to uninstall old radio equipment and time
material to install new equipment)
Total cost $191,640.60
