Rainwater Garden Solicitation
Based the findings of our review of treatment options, we have prepared an
informational letterlsolicitation that has been sent to the properties within the drainage
area of Savage Lake where stormwater runoff is untreated to determine resident interest
in improving the water quality in the Lake through the use of rainwater gardens. The
survey requests the name and address of the respondent and an indication if they would
be acceptable to a rainwater garden, if they would like more information on a rainwater
garden before making a decision, or if they do not want a rainwater garden. We have
requested that responses be returned to the City by October 15`h and a summary of the
responses and a recommendation on a process for moving forward will be reported at
that time.
Recommendations
As stated at the beginning of this memo we are proceeding with the preparation of a
sediment removal plan for the wetland in the northeast corner of Jackson and Demont
and would recommend that the City complete the project this winter. We would
recommend that the Council consider including the removal of the smaller sediment
blooms in Savage Lake as part of the project to ensure that it cannot be done for a cost
effective price.
To address treatment of the other contributing drainage areas to Savage Lake it is our
recommendation that the City retrofit rainwater gardens to the extent possible to improve
water quality in the lake. With a sufficient number of rainwater gardens the current
treatment standards could b® met, which would minimize any future treatment needs
when improvements era made in the areas in the future. Treatment structures would
provide some treatment of stormwater prior to discharge to Savage Lake. However, due
to their cost and limited treatment ability we feel these should be used only as a possible
second option to the rainwater gardens.
if you have any questions please call me at (783) 780-0450 extension 13.
10062 Flanders Couri NE -Blaine, MN 55449 - Ph: (783) 780-0450 Fax (763) 780-0452
Memo•10020gAC (Savage Acgon Plan Progress)
19
