Following the recent resignation of Samantha House, staff moved forward with a hiring process
to fill this position as quickly as possible. After conducting interviews with two finalists, the
position was offered to Sierra Hietala who will be starting on August 25, 2021. Sierra has a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation, Parks & Leisure Services from Minnesota State
University, Mankato. She has recently been working for another north-metro city parks
department as the summer youth programming lead and farmer’s market supervisor and will
bring great experience and energy to this position.
BUDGET IMPACT:
Due to this position being vacant for a few months this year, there are currently savings available
in the 2021 budget to increase the Recreation Coordinator position hours up to 40 hours per week
immediately. Staff anticipates higher revenues from programming such as the 5K Sap Run and
other potential new events to cover the budget impact of increasing this position from 34 to 40
hours per week. Additional revenue of $10,000 has been included in the preliminary budget for
2022 to facilitate this change.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the change in status for the Recreation Coordinator from 34 hours per week to 40
hours per week as a regular full-time position.
