STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of the City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: October 7, 2021

RE: Replacement of Woodlynn Lift Station Pumps

ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED:
Motion to approve the replacement of the Woodlynn lift station pumps with Gorman Rupp
pumps at a price of $18,534.20.

BACKGROUND:
The Woodlynn lift station was installed in 1999 to carry sewage from the two buildings at the
bottom of the hill on Woodlynn Avenue. The original pumps are still being used and are ready
to be replaced. The typical life for a pump is around seven years but the Woodlynn pumps do
not see a lot of flow so they have less wear and tear than the average pump.

The City has the same type and brand of lift station at all eight locations in order to have
consistency in operation, maintenance, and part procurement. Gorman Rupp pumps are used at
all of the lift stations. The cost to replace the existing pumps with Gorman Rupp pumps is
$18,534.20. Staff worked with General Repair to get a quote from a comparable pump to make
sure the Gorman Rupp pump is in the same range. General Repair quoted Homa pumps as a
comparison. Those pumps cost $12,848.36 but are a lower quality pump with different parts and
maintenance. Along with that, in order to install the Homa pumps, new base elbows and guide
shoes would need to be installed and the price to do that work plus the pumps would exceed the
Gorman Rupp quote. General Repair provided a rough quote of $3500 for the equipment and
around the same amount for the labor, which totals in the $7000 range.

In order to stay consistent with all lift station operations, staff recommends replacing the existing
pumps with the Gorman Rupp pumps.

SOURCE OF FUNDS:
Funds will be used from 2021 Water/Sewer Capital Improvement Fund. $16,000 was budgeted
for the replacement of the pumps. The price increase is due to the general increase in price in the
materials used to build the pumps.

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends approving the replacement of the Woodlynn lift station pumps with Gorman
Rupp pumps at a price of $18,534.20.
ATTACHMENTS:
Price Quote for Gorman Rupp pumps
Price Quote for Homa Pumps
