COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT <br />Department Overview <br />The Community Development Department provides direction and vision for the future economic and physical <br />growth of the City of Little Canada. The Planning Division carries out the objectives and policies of the <br />Comprehensive Plan to enhance the quality of life, facilitate orderly growth and development in the community <br />through zoning administration, land use application processing, and long-range planning. The Protective <br />Inspections Division is responsible for the enforcement of the adopted building codes. The Division also provides <br />quality customer service, technical information, permit processing, inspections, and code enforcement to ensure <br />compliance with State and local standards for livability and the integrity of the community and surrounding <br />area. <br />Our Mission <br />Our mission is to serve as a resource for residents and business owners in an effort to find solutions for their <br />property needs. Planning and Zoning is about creating opportunities that help guide the City, its neighborhoods, <br />and commercial components into a resilient future. <br />Service Areas <br />•Planning and Land Use •Economic Development •Building Permits <br />•Zoning Administration •Code Enforcement •Building Inspections <br />•Rental Housing Inspections <br />•Fire Inspections <br />•Comprehensive Plan <br />Implementation <br />•Staff liaison to Planning <br />Commission <br />2020/2021 Departmental Accomplishments <br />•Completion of the Zoning Code Update in December 2021 <br />•Part-time Code Enforcement/Rental Housing Coordinator hire joined the team in April 2021 <br />•Community Development Intern joined the team Summer 2021 <br />•Part-time Fire inspector hire joined the team in June 2021 <br />•Successful completion of 20 various Planning Cases <br />•Outdoor Storage Licensing inspections successfully completed <br />•Completion of 659 Signs, Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical permits in 2020 and 364 (as of <br />July 2021) in 2021 <br />2022 Departmental Goals <br />•Complete Implementation of Zoning Code Update <br />•Finish implementing permit and licensing software <br />•Hire Community Development Intern for summer 2022 to assist with departmental needs <br />Budgetary Commentary <br />Planning Budget – The budget is decreasing due to the completion of the zoning code update that was approved <br />on October 14, 2020 in the amount of $22,500 and will be completed December 2021. This was included in the <br />2021 Budget. <br />Inspections Budget – The budget is increasing 7.91% to account for the Code Enforcement/Rental Housing <br />Coordinator that was included in the 2021 budget for 8 months and is in the 2022 budget for 12 months. <br />Fire Inspections Budget – The budget is decreasing 15.56% for realized savings from the successful restructuring <br />of the fire inspector consultant position to a fire inspection employee position at 8 hours per week. <br />49
