MINUTES <br />PARKS & REC COMMISSION <br />December 3, 2020 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />4 <br />Commissioner Chu referenced the lack of responses from the Hmong community and asked if <br />there was any input on recommendations to gain participation from that demographic. <br /> <br />Ms. Klenz stated that in the English responses they asked if there were another language <br />respondents spoke and some of those respondents stated that Hmong was another language, they <br />spoke but simply chose to reply to the survey in English. <br /> <br />Mr. Carlson stated that perhaps it would help to work with existing agencies in the community <br />that have relationships with that portion of the community that could be used as a partner in <br />gaining input from that group. <br /> <br />The Community Services Manager stated that they will do another push to get the survey out and <br />asked Commissioners to assist in sharing the link. He reviewed the next steps noting that the <br />fellows will be providing their final report to the City Council at its December 16th workshop <br />meeting, which will be televised. He stated that recommendations will be provided, and the City <br />will be able to use the results to create the plan for Pioneer Park. He noted that there will <br />continue to be community engagement opportunities in the future. He stated that a community <br />building could help to provide space for programming and different options for the community. <br />He commented that this engagement model can now be replicated for engagement in the future. <br /> <br />Commissioner Chu asked if a summary would be available to share in the newsletter following <br />the presentation to the Council. <br /> <br />The Community Services Manager agreed that it would be helpful to have something that could <br />be shared with the community. <br /> <br />Chair Miller commented that he will plan to virtually attend the Council workshop and <br />encouraged other Commissioners to do so as well in case there are questions that arise. <br /> <br />OLD BUSINESS: COMMISSION VACANCY UPDATE <br />Chair Miller stated that three Commissioners are up for renewal, noting that two members have <br />reapplied, and two new candidates have applied as well. He advised of the upcoming interview <br />date and stated that a recommendation would then be made to the City Council to fill the <br />vacancy. <br /> <br />The Community Services Manager advised that the City Council will appoint a Chair at its <br />December 16th meeting and the Commission will appoint a Vice-Chair at its January meeting. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS: WINTER PROGRAMMING <br />The Recreation Coordinator reviewed the upcoming winter programming which includes a <br />holiday-themed take-home project that can be mailed out once ordered and adult education <br />classes that will be held virtually in January. <br />
