STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Claire Hoffman, Recreation Coordinator

DATE: November 7, 2019
RE: Little Canada Farmers Market

BACKGROUND
The Little Canada Farmers Market season ended on October 7. The Market had between four to
eight vendors every week, which included produce, flowers, baked goods, coffee, and
community organizations. Visitation ranged from 150 – 300 people every week, including some
who visited regularly and established friendly relationships with the vendors.
This year’s Farmers Market benefitted from increased visibility, reliable vendors, and a social
media presence. Staff was dedicated to increasing the social media presence on the Little
Canada Farmers Market Facebook page by staying active and engaging on the Facebook page
there were 54 new Likes and Followers this season. We also had a community table where staff
gave out program information, talked with residents, and handed out free city swag.
Staff is also working with the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) and Saint Paul-
Ramsey County Public Health to possibly bring Market Bucks and Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to next year’s market. SNAP provides benefits to eligible
low-income individuals and families via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Market
Bucks help SNAP customers stretch their dollars at the farmers market making healthy food
more affordable. Market Bucks match SNAP-EBT spending dollar-for-dollar (up to $10) at
participating markets across Minnesota.
Overall, staff was thrilled with the 2019 Farmers Market season and will continue to work on
growing the Market for next.

ATTACHMENTS
• Farmers Market Pictures
