STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Claire Hoffman, Recreation Coordinator

DATE: November 7, 2019

RE: Astronomy in the Park

BACKGROUND
Astronomy in the park is a bi-weekly event that began in June and will run through November 9.
It is located in the Pioneer Park East parking lot and run by Dave Johnson, a volunteer from the
Minnesota Astronomical Society. Dave lived across Pioneer Park for 20 years before recently
moving to Maplewood. He supplies two telescopes and is in the park from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m.
People can stop by to look through the telescopes and discuss Astronomy. Between 5-20 people
have stopped by in an evening. Astronomy in the Park is a great ‘passive’ program for people to
participate in and offers a program option to non-traditional groups.
Staff is excited to announce Little Canada’s Astronomy in the Park is participating in the Bell
Museum’s Statewide Star party on Saturday, November 9. Over 30 different locations across the
state are participating, and the Bell Museum has sent us promotional material and activities to
offer to the community. The Star Party will wrap-up the Astronomy in the Park season. Staff
hopes to continue the program next year.
ATTACHMENTS
• State-wide Star Party Flyer
