STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Claire Hoffman, Recreation Coordinator

DATE: July 9, 2020

RE: Little Canada Farmers Market

The Little Canada Farmers Market began Monday, July 6, 2020. The Market runs 1:30 – 5:00
p.m. every Monday until September 28 (excluding September 7 for the Labor Day Holiday). The
Market takes place at the Hardware Hank Parking Lot at the corner of Rice Street and
Marketplace Boulevard.
Farmers Markets have been deemed essential within the Covid-19 pandemic, and the majority of
Minnesota Farmers Markets are operating this year. Staff has been staying up to date with the
Ramsey County Farmers Market Alliance and Minnesota Grown to ensure Little Canada is
following proper Covid-19 practices. These include social distancing measures, hand sanitizer
and masks available on-site, ‘Healthy Market Tips’ signs at both entrances, and not allowing
visitors to handle produce until it has been purchased.
Vendors attending the Market this year include four returning and new produce vendors, a
Master Gardener booth, and a Food Truck. Additional vendors are encouraged to apply and may
sign up at any time. This year the Market is starting an hour earlier than last year due to visitation
patterns. Additionally, the City receives SCORE funding from Ramsey County Public Health
that is used to support our waste reduction and recycling-related activities/services in Little
Canada. With funding from the SCORE grant, staff designed and purchased ‘Little Canada
Recycles’ reusable bags. These bags will be handed out to the first 100 visitors of the Market.

The Farmers Market was well received last year and has built a base of weekly visitors and an
increased following on Facebook. Staff is looking forward to a great market season.
ATTACHMENTS
• Farmers Market photo
• Healthy Market Tips sign
• Reusable bag photo
