STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Bryce Shearen, CPRP, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager

DATE: March 4, 2021

RE: Park Entrance Signs

ACTION REQUESTED
A motion to recommend a design, shape, and color for the new park entrance signs.

BACKGROUND:
Identified in the 2021 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is the replacement of the City park
entrance signs. Staff has been working with a local sign company on a design for the new
entrance signs. The current signs are made of wood and are showing signs of the end of life and
one park entrance sign is missing due to vandalism. Wood signs do require additional
maintenance and staff would like to install low/minimal maintenance signs moving forward.

The proposed new signs are made from a bi-color HDPE plastic with the letters routed out
exposing the secondary color. These HDPE sign panels provide a durable, vandal-resistant, low-
maintenance sign that will not need painting and will swill, rot, crack, chip, or delaminate. Also
included is an example of the Recycled Plastic Lumber Posts that staff would recommend
installing with the new signs. The recycled plastic posts are reinforced with fiberglass for
increased structural integrity and will not need to be painted or stained. The recycled plastic will
also eliminate the issue with the wood rot that occurs near the ground with traditional wood
posts.

Attached are two different sign shapes and colors for consideration. Staff would recommend
continuing to use the traditional historic font that is currently on the park entrance signs and the
same font for the Firefighter Historical Trail Sign and believes the dark woods green outside
color with the tan letters would offer an improved look to the signs and help easily identify city
parks.
Signs to be replaced:
Fire Barns Skate Park Gervais Mill Park (Edgerton Entrance Gervais Mill Park (Noel Drive Entrance)
Gilbertson Field Nadeau Wildlife Area Pioneer Park (Centerville Rd Entrance)
Pioneer Park (Desoto St Entrance) Rondeau Park Thunder Bay / Westwinds Park
Veterans Memorial Park - TBD

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the Commission discuss and provide a recommendation on design, shape, and
color for the new park entrance signs.
