45 <br />The DNR has classified five lakes and an unnamed stream as public waters within the City.Classifications for the <br />lakes and creek are shown in the Table 12 below: <br />Table 12: Little Canada’s Public Waters <br />Public Waters Num- <br />ber Name of Resource Classification <br />62-3801P Vadnais Lake Recreational Development <br />62-390P Twin Lake Natural Environment <br />62-90P Round Lake General Development <br />62-80P Savage Lake General Development <br />62-70P Gervais Lake General Development <br />62-08aPW Unnamed Stream Public Water Watercourse <br />Source: MnDNR <br />Little Canada protects the shoreland of its lakes through its Shoreland Ordinance.The uncontrolled use of <br />shoreland can negatively impact public health,safety and general welfare through contributions to pollution <br />and the impairment of the local tax base.Little Canada’s Shoreland Overlay District requirements are based on <br />the DNR’s classification of the identified protected waters and provide for the use utilization of the shoreland <br />areas to preserve the quality and character of the City’s protected waters. <br />Impaired Waters <br />Every two years the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA)creates a list of waters in the state that do not <br />meet water quality standards set forth by the Clean Water Act.The MPCA lists the following waterbodies <br />located within or near the City as being impaired: <br />•Gervais Lake (Assessment ID 62-0007-00): impaired for mercury in fish tissue, affecting aquatic <br />consumption. <br />•Vadnais Lake (Assessment ID 62-0038-01): impaired for mercury in fish tissue, affecting aquatic <br />consumption. <br />RWMWD classified Round Lake in Little Canada as at risk.The District will research options for control of Round <br />Lake’s (Little Canada)internal load of phosphorus and implement reduction measures if deemed necessary to <br />maintain water quality. <br />The City will continue to work with RWMWD on steps to protect and enhance its impaired waters,and the <br />impaired waters of the region.
